New Release: Bone Cold!

Bone-ColdBONE COLD, Book 2 in the Soul Shamans series, releases tomorrow! Right now, it’s still available on Amazon for 99 cents on pre-order. I’m super excited about this book. Holly and the gang encounter a new type of magic, some shaman-resistant spirits, and a mysterious figure from Holly’s past. Really hope everyone enjoys reading this next chapter in Holly’s adventure!

Just when Holly Bennett thinks life in the sleepy town of Seaport might finally be back to normal—or as normal as it gets when you’re a shaman—the you-know-what hits the fan again.

Nathan, her sweet boyfriend, turns distant and cold. Her best friend Laura grows secretive and paranoid, and her mother disappears to hunt a dangerous shaman. Naturally, that’s the moment soul-sucking spirits descend upon Seaport, leaving a trail of corpses in their wake. And familiar faces lie among the dead.

Holly struggles to stop the carnage, but she soon finds these spirits are impervious to her powers. Alone and confused, she must unlock their secrets while there’s still something of Seaport left to save. But when the sinister truth is revealed, friendships will break and lives will be lost. And Holly will learn what it means to be utterly betrayed.

The Union (The Union Series #1) by T.H.HernandezEXCLUSIVE CONTENT

After global warming and a second civil war devastated the former United States, two different societies rose from the ashes – the Union, a towering high-tech utopia, hugging the perimeter of the continent, and the devastated, untamed midsection known as the Ruins.

Seventeen-year-old Evan Taylor has an easy, privileged life in the Union. What she doesn’t have is any idea what to do with the rest of her life. She only knows she wants to do something meaningful, to make a difference in the lives of others. When she’s kidnapped and taken into the Ruins as a pawn in a dispute involving her boyfriend, Bryce, her ideal world is turned upside down. What she learns while in the Ruins shakes her faith in everything she’s ever known, from Bryce, to her family, and even the Union itself.

Now Evan must choose whether to stay with Cyrus, the sexy, resourceful survivor who believes she’s in the Ruins for a reason, or return to the only life she’s ever known. But when she stumbles upon a dangerous plot that threatens both worlds, her decision could tear her apart.

This exclusive, bonus scene takes place between Chapters 20 and 21 of The Union, the day after Evan’s first trip to the trading post.

I’m starting to wish I hadn’t offered to help Will dig the new latrine this morning. Even though I wore gloves, fresh blisters are popping up on the pads below my fingers. I hope to god Sonia has something to put on them.

On my way downstairs, I pop my head into the room she shares with Marcus, but she’s not in there, or in the kitchen. Ben and Connor are folding laundry on the dining room table while Ty pushes dirt around the floor with a broom in his four-year-old attempt at sweeping.

“Hey, guys,” I say. “Have you seen Sonia?”

“She’s outside,” Connor says.

“They’re watching the gun show,” Ben says with a roll of his dark eyes.

“The gun show?” I ask. This is new. I have yet to fire a gun, and I’m not sure I actually want to, but I can’t deny I’m intrigued.

Heading out the door off the kitchen, I bounce down the stairs to the wrap around porch. A steady thwacking comes from beyond the porch. It doesn’t sound like gunfire though. It’s more of a dull sound.

When I round the corner, Ally, Sonia and Draya are leaning against the porch railing with their backs to me. Ally glances over her shoulder at me as I approach.

“What’s going on?” I ask.

“Just taking in the scenery,” Sonia says.

I push up the railing to see what’s so fascinating. “Holy…woah,” I say, additional words refusing to form in my head, much less come out of my mouth.

“Yeah,” Ally says.

Cyrus stands with his back to us, his shirt off, his shorts hanging low on his hips revealing two dimples on his lower back just above his waistband. He swings an ax, bringing it down on a log in front of him, splitting it two. Muscles flex and contract with each swing, sweat running down smooth, tanned skin.

“Damn,” I whisper.

I watch his bicep flex when he brings the ax up again. He reaches for another log, placing it on the chopping block and takes another swing.

“So, um…” I clear my throat, “does this go on every day.”

“Yup,” Draya says.

It suddenly occurs to me that she’s watching her boyfriend’s shirtless brother with way too much interest. I cut my eyes to her. “I take it this is the gun show.” I sweep my arm out in front of me.

Sonia’s cheeks turn pink. “Well, he does have impressive guns.”

“Don’t you have a boyfriend?” I ask her.

She shrugs. “Do you see him chopping firewood without his shirt on?”

“Does he know you watch him?”

“Doubtful,” Draya says. “It’d go to his already inflated head.”

Cyrus doesn’t strike me as particularly cocky, but she knows him better than I do.

“Whose turn is it today?” Sonia asks.

“It’s mine,” Ally says. “But I think Evan should take it.”

Three pairs of eyes toward me and Draya’s lips quirk up in a mischievous smile.

“Uh, my turn for what?”

“To take him a glass of water,” Ally says. “We all rotate. Honestly, you need to see the front, and it’s the only way.”

“Oh, no.” I say, backing away. “I’m not participating in your eye groping.”

“Aww, come on, you’re practically drooling. And your eyes have barely left him since you walked out here,” Draya says.

“That’s not the point. Besides, I saw him shirtless yesterday at the swimming hole on the way back from the trading post.”

“Suit yourself,” Draya says, handing a glass of water to Ally.

Suddenly, as if I have no control over my arm, I reach out and snag the glass from Draya. “Fine. I’ll do it.”

“I thought so,” Ally says under her breath.

I cross the length of the porch to the steps and walk down the path to where Cyrus is. He glances up as I approach and wipes his arm across his forehead. He smiles and reaches out to take the glass.

“How do you know this is for you?” I ask.

His left eyebrow notches up. “It’s not?”

“No it is.”

His smile broadens, and I’m glad the weirdness between us from last night is gone. I hate that I let it get to me that he’d spent all afternoon with Lucy. It’s none of my business. But standing here in front of a half-naked Cyrus, sweat glistening off of taught skin, it’s hard not to imagine what they were doing. I fight the blush rushing to my cheeks.

“So what are you up to this afternoon?” he asks, taking a sip of water.

“I was looking for Sonia to get something to put on these,” I say running my fingertips lightly over the blisters on my left hand.

“How’d you get those?”

“Digging a latrine.”

He smiles. “Oh really?”

“What?” I ask, wondering what’s so funny about that.

“Nothing.” He shakes his head. “Too bad though. I could show you how to chop firewood, but you probably don’t want to do that with blistered hands.”

“No, probably not.”

He finishes the water and hands the glass back to me. “Thanks for this.”

“Apparently it was my turn,” I say with a smile.

“What?”

“Nothing.” I give him the same lame non-answer he gave me. Touché. I turn to head back to the porch.

“Hey,” he calls out. I turn back, my eyes locking onto his six-pack abs before gliding over sculpted chest muscles and finally meeting his eyes. “Green tea.”

“H-huh?”

“Your blisters. Soak them in green tea. Apply some aloe vera and wrap them in gauze.”

“Oh, thanks.”

He turns back and swings the ax again, and I watch one more time as those muscles do magical things to my circulatory system.

YA Spring Fling Author Interview with Ceinwen Langley

YA Spring Fling med

The YA Spring Fling is in full swing, an epic giveaway with over 100 books up for grabs from over 70 authors. The giveaway is still open from now until April 3rd. If you’d like to enter to win some awesome readerly prizes, go check out the site here.

Today I’m talking to Ceinwen Langley, one of the YA authors participating in the giveaway. Ceinwen is the author of The Edge of the Woods, an awesome fantasy read about a girl who must decide between the stifling life she’s always known and a mysterious (but potentially dangerous) life in the woods.

Portrait of Cei Langley, Author

Welcome Ceinwen! What’s your favourite thing about spring?

Unfortunately, while the northern hemisphere’s getting ready for Spring we down in Australia are just rolling into Autumn. But I’m looking forward to the flowers Spring will eventually bring (if not the hay fever!). I’ve become a bit of a gardener over the last year or so and I’ve managed to grow daffodils, bluebells and snowdrops in my slightly unforgiving climate.

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Creating new characters and worlds. I spend a lot of time thinking about my characters before I start to write their stories. It lets me get to know them as people and immerse myself in the world they live in. I try not to think too much about the plot of their story, but figure out what their day to day life looks like before their story begins. What do they want, what do they need, what problems are they facing? How does their routine work? I feel like it gives me a solid starting point, and it also means I’m basically never bored. Stuck in a queue? Hop over to dystopian London and hang out with Riley. Long flight? Figure out what Mona would get up to out on the road.

What’s the worst thing about being a writer?

Deadlines! The pay! Having to show people what you’ve written! Having to talk to people about what you’ve written! I’m the unfortunate writer stereotype, I like to hang out alone in my pyjamas with MS Word and as much hot chocolate as my cranky intestines will allow. Getting other people as excited about my work as I am is pretty daunting, and I’m still working on being good at it. Can’t you tell?

edge-cover2Tell us more about your books.

So far I’ve only published one book, The Edge of the Woods, which is a stand-alone fantasy that follows Emma, a young woman trying to navigate the rigid social structures of her village to ensure a decent life for herself and her widowed mother. Unfortunately, as a girl with no father, no money and no prospects, the odds are stacked against her. When a mysterious (and very pretty!) young man appears from the woods and offers her an easy way out, Emma has to decide whether she wants an escape from the future the village has in store for her or a chance to fight for a better one.

My aim with The Edge of the Woods – and all of my books – is to tell stories about complicated, interesting young women from all walks of life. I want to take them on adventures, help them navigate through difficult decisions, see them struggle and fail and still figure out a way through.

Tell us something interesting about your main character.

Emma snores. Like a hog.

Coffee or Tea?

Tea, no milk no sugar, preferably green or fruity.

Plotter or Pantser?

Both and neither. I plot, and then I pants, and then I agonise, and then replot, and then pants again, and then have a stress induced break. So I’m probably an Agoniser.

Are there any books involved in the YA Spring Fling that you’re secretly lusting after?

I’m seriously eyeing off Sacrificed by Emily Wibberly, Solace by Therin Knite, The Witching Elm by C.N. Crawford and White Hart by Sarah Dalton.

What was the last YA book you read?

Laurinda by Alice Pung. It’s fabulous, you should read it.

What are your top tips for surviving a bad review?

To think about every book, TV show or movie I’ve ever hated and let rip on, and then remember how many people I know whose opinions were completely different. Sometimes there are really valid lessons in bad reviews, but a lot of the time, it’s just a readers personal preference. Not everyone is going to love or even like what you do, and that’s okay.

What are your top tips for surviving a zombie apocalypse?

I do actually have a machete on standby for this sort of thing (also house intruders and serial killers) but I’m pretty sure I’m one of the casualties in the opening montage of the zombie movie. I’m slow, weak, and too short to be able to smack anything hard enough in the head. Though in an ideal situation, I would somehow be near The Rock when the apocalypse starts and he’ll just sort of take me in. And never wear a shirt.

What inspires you?

It’s hard to pin down any one thing. Sometimes it’s taking something I’ve heard on the news and asking what could cause something like that to happen, or what could happen next. Sometimes it’s a song or artwork that makes me feel a certain way, and a story grows around that mood. Sometimes it’s just remembering an old story and twisting it on its head, or seeing a recurring trope and wanting to do something completely different. And sometimes it’s a city, or a house, or a patch of land. If you keep your eyes, ears and mind open, almost anything can inspire you to write something. Great ideas can spark from the smallest things.

Where can readers find your books?

The Edge of the Woods is currently digitally exclusive to Amazon, but you can buy the paperback from Amazon, Barnes and Noble and Book Depository. I also occasionally contribute to magazines. To keep up with my work and read some short stories, you can follow me over at my website.

Thanks for stopping by Ceinwen!

Don’t forget to stop by Sarah Dalton’s website to be in with a chance of winning this amazing book as well as the many others up for grabs! 🙂 Good luck everyone!
